Students Ensure Smiles on Faces of Children Less Fortunate
December 13, 2012
Christmas is in the air…cinnamon, scented candles, and freshly cut balsams, all friendly reminders of the most joyous of holidays. Christmas is known to bring dazzling smiles to children everywhere and again this year our students have ensured that smiles will appear on the faces of children less fortunate.
One of the Academy’s most meaningful holiday events is the Stocking Drive, a long-standing tradition spearheaded by the Student Council. Each year the first day of December marks the beginning of this service project. Homeroom reps provide students with the gender and grade of a child to fill a stocking and students are reminded that their stocking may be the only present that this child receives at Christmas. Suggested items include small toys, toiletries, winter hats, mittens and scarves, art and school supplies.
Offers Student Council president Nicole Brown ‘13, “The annual Stocking Drive is not only enjoyed by the students that receive the stockings but maybe even more by the Sacred Heart students who give them…this is a special tradition at Sacred Heart, very close to everyone’s hearts.”
The Stocking Drive culminated with the annual Christmas Prayer Service when the entire school joined in chapel and students and faculty members placed stockings on the altar. Stockings were then delivered to St. Francis/St. Rose School and St. Martin de Porres, both in New Haven, by Student Council.
Again this year, over one hundred graduates also assembled stockings. “I cherish this Sacred Heart tradition…I find joy in filling my stocking each year, knowing what it will mean to a less fortunate child,” offered an alumna.
