Sacred Heart Reaches Out to NYC School Affected by Hurricane Sandy
November 7, 2012
Our mission reminds us that it is our goal to educate the whole student; to give her experiences that will develop her heart as well as her mind. Service experiences allow our students to appreciate their own gifts and blessings and to develop a sense of compassion and responsibility toward those in need.
Concerned about those affected by the hurricane, Principal Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, ’81 and the students felt compelled to take action. Sister had just learned about an elementary school in New York City that sustained nine feet of water destroying the prek 3, prek 4, and kindergarten classrooms as well as the gymnasium which also serves as the cafeteria. It was decided to hold a Dress Down Day on Friday, November 9 and also take up a collection of coats, blankets, and non-perishable food items for Guardian Angel School, a community desperately in need of help. Students are being asked to donate $5.00.
“Guardian Angel School will be getting three portable classrooms from FEMA to use until January when repairs should hopefully be completed. This donation from the Sacred Heart community will certainly help them along the way,” offered Sister Maureen.
