Ice Hockey – 14th Varsity Sport
September 14, 2015
Sacred Heart has joined West Haven High School in forming a co-op ice hockey team within the Southern Connecticut Conference Girls Hockey League. Teams form cooperatives when there are not enough student-athletes to form an individual school team. Approximately ten student-athletes from each school will participate in our newest varsity sport.
The team will be coached by Erin Blake, a three sport stand-out at WHHS in soccer, ice hockey, and softball. A 2010 graduate of Albertus Magnus College, Erin played varsity soccer there for four years. After earning a master’s degree in education at Southern Connecticut State University, she accepted a fifth grade teaching position at Carrigan Intermediate School in West Haven.
The Sacred Heart Academy/West Haven Co-op Team will play a 20 game schedule. Practices begin in November at Bennett Rink in West Haven which will serve as the home rink and team members are currently working on uniform design. Other teams competing in the league include Branford, Daniel Hand, East Catholic, Guilford, Hall/Conard Co-op, Hamden, Lauralton Hall, Notre Dame of Fairfield, and Simsbury.
“I would like to express my appreciation to those involved in this collaboration—West Haven Athletic Director Jon Capone, West Haven Superintendent of Schools Neil Cavallaro, the West Haven Board of Education, as well as our President Sr. Sheila and Principal Sr. Maureen,” shared Athletic Director George Bedocs.
The Sacred Heart Athletic Program offers a choice of 27 teams competing in 14 varsity and junior varsity sports, with freshman teams in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Over the years, Sacred Heart teams have qualified for All-Conference, All-State, and All American selections. Over 70% of our students compete in interscholastic sports.
