Stocking Drive – Making Headlines
December 15, 2014
Making the Stocking Drive extra special this year was Elizabeth Hammerberg’s ’15 involvement. “Lizzie” is the granddaughter of Barbara Fitzsimons who founded the Stocking Drive when her daughter, Catherine Fitzsimons ’72, was a senior here.
“My grandmother started the Stocking Drive when she was president of the Mothers’ Club, and when one of her four daughters, “Cathy” was a senior. When she originally brought it to Sacred Heart the stockings were hand sewn and were donated to Highland Heights on Prospect Avenue in New Haven, among other places. The project began small and caught on. My grandmother still feels is was a ‘heck of a good idea.’ The stockings were originally filled with toiletries, hair products and other essentials, and stuffed animals…all kid-friendly. My grandmother would sit with her friend and sort and fill the stockings because ‘it’s just the little things you do that make someone’s day.’ She is ‘tickled’ to think that the project lives on.”
Betsy Fitzsimons ’76 (mother of Lizzie ’15) and her aunts, Carol Fitzsimons ’71 and Barbara Fitzsimons Berkovich ’79, also attended the Academy.
