Academy Welcomes Apostle Leadership from Around the World
October 23, 2013
Our students recently wowed Superior General of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sr. M. Clare Millea, ASCJ, ’65, General Councillors – Sr. Alice Reginato, ASCJ and Sr. Mary Grace Giaimo, ASCJ, ’72, and seven Provincial Superiors from around the world – including U.S. Provincial Sr. Anne Walsh, ASCJ, ’81, at an assembly held in their honor. The Provincials are visiting Apostle missions in the United States hoping to gain a better understanding of faith, culture, and ministry here in the U.S.
Our special guests thoroughly enjoyed “A Day at SHA” slideshow, a medley of songs typically sung at First Friday liturgies, and a welcome and performances by students, all in different languages.
A very excited Sr. Miriam Cunha Sobrinha, ASCJ, Provincial Superior of the Sao Paulo Province, which sponsors the Apostle mission in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, was called to the stage to accept a monetary donation and more than 200 pairs of sneakers donated by students. The Sacred Heart community, having been partnered with Port-Au-Prince as part of the “Mission Solidarity Project” initiated by Mother Clare, has been selling water after school each day and collecting donations to raise money for this very poor mission. Offered President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71, “As we move forward with this partnership, we hope soon to initiate a Pen Pal project with the children of Haiti and our dream is that one day we might travel to Haiti to volunteer our time working with our Sisters there.”
Perhaps the highlight of the morning was Sr. Sheila’s announcement that beginning in fall 2014, Sacred Heart will establish The Sr. M. Clare Millea, ASCJ Excelsior Lecture Series, designed to promote engaging conversation about themes that reflect Sister’s passion for scholarship, leadership, and service to the Church. Mother Clare, the world leader of the Apostles and a graduate of the Academy, was visibly moved on hearing this news.
“We were delighted to celebrate the internationality of the Apostles and gain a better understanding about the Congregation that teaches us,” shared a sophomore. “The Apostles truly minister on a global scale,” she added.
Please enjoy the slideshow of the assembly.
